Indie Initiative: Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game

In operation for just over a year now, our Indie Initiative has given us the opportunity to meet some truly fascinating, cutting-edge indie game developers and help bring to the world some astounding indie games, whether through our talents in localization, community management, or player support.

As is generally the case with indie games, many introduce some incredible concepts and stories to the world, and in no game does this feel more true than in Hidden Achievement’s Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game.

Based on the best-selling fantasy crime novels of the same name by Jim Butcher, and more directly on Evil Hat Productions’ table top edition of the title, Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game puts players in the role of detective/wizard Harry Dresden and his companions as they make their way through the world of the novels by solving mysteries and defeating villains that will be familiar to fans of the beloved series.

Much of the world of the game is drawn directly from the novels, featuring fan favourite playable characters like Harry Dresden, Karrin Murphy, Susan Rodriguez, Thomas Raith, Michael Carpenter, and many more putting their magic and investigative skills to the test against several decks based directly on cases and villains from the ever-expanding series (including Storm Front, Fool Moon, Summer Knight, Grave Peril, Death Masks, and others, as well as a randomized deck based on Butcher’s collection of short stories, Side Jobs).

Released on 31st October 2017 (a very fitting date for the spooky noir series), Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game can accommodate up to 5 players across a series of game modes – including LAN and online multiplayer, allowing fans of the series across the world to come together and celebrate all things Dresden Files. It feels as if the developers have really pulled out all the stops in making this a successful translation from table top to digital card game that’s both fun to play and true to both the novels and the original game. Perhaps one of the biggest successes of the game is the immersive user experience that carries throughout, with each deck coming with its own set of scores and sound effects to help integrate the user into the world of the narrative it belongs to. The gameplay itself proves a challenge for even the most seasoned of gamers, testing their deductive and reasoning skills enough to provide countless hours of extremely addictive table top simulation – and should that not be enough, there’s already a large number of expansion packs available.

Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game comes from Hidden Achievement, a rapidly rising star in the indie games development world, based in Austin, Texas. Hidden Achievements are no strangers to the world of card games having already released the popular Deck of Fate in 2016 (another adaptation of a successful Evil Hat Productions table top game), along with other genre-driven titles like Metal Glove and Outpost Delta, reminiscent of classic retro arcade games. Fun fact about the original Evil Hat version of Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game, the project was funded entirely by a Kickstarter campaign in June 2016 which saw over half a million dollars donated by more than 8,000 backers.

Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game is an absolute must for both fans of table top fantasy games and Dresden Files fans alike. The immersive gameplay, along with the fantastic online multiplayer modes, are guaranteed to keep gamers coming back for more.

To find out more about Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game, or to try it for yourself, you can find it right now on Steam. You can also find Hidden Achievement’s full back catalogue of games over on their website.
